IWSC 2024 Wine Judging in South Africa Celebrates Outstanding Achievements

The IWSC 2024 Global Judging events recently concluded in Stellenbosch, South Africa, where over 500 wine entries were meticulously tasted and assessed by a panel of esteemed judges. Led by John Hoskins MW of the IWSC Wine Judging Committee, the judging team comprised both international and local on-trade and off-trade wine professionals who were deeply impressed by the exceptional quality showcased.

This year’s judging yielded remarkable results, with over 95% of the wines receiving medals. In total, South African wines were awarded over 520 medals, including an impressive 36 golds, underscoring the region’s prowess in producing world-class wines.

The Cap Classique category shone brightly, with standout performances that impressed the judges with their global appeal and complexity. Notably, the Villiera Monro Brut 2017 vintage sparkling garnered 97 points and a gold medal, celebrated for its concentrated palate, defined flavors, and creamy complexity.

Chardonnays also made a significant impact, with wines like the Capensis Wines Silene Chardonnay 2022 and Kershaw Wines Clonal Selection Chardonnay 2020 both earning 97 points and gold medals. These wines impressed with their well-integrated oak, vibrant fruit profiles, and impressive structure.

Cabernet Sauvignon entries were noted for their elegance and structural finesse, exemplified by wines like the Peter Falke Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, which earned a strong gold with 96 points. Judges praised its rich fruit flavors, grippy tannins, and vibrant finish.

Shiraz and Pinotage also showcased their versatility and quality, with notable mentions including the Reserve Syrah 2021 by De Morgenzon (Pty) Ltd and Writer’s Block Pinotage 2021 by Flagstone Winery, both earning high accolades for their complexity and varietal character.

Chenin Blanc demonstrated a marked improvement in quality, with wines like the Perdeberg Wines Endura Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2022 earning 96 points and a gold medal. Judges appreciated its rich texture, ripe fruit notes, and harmonious balance.
