Local vineyards on California’s Central Coast are advancing sustainability efforts by completing a certification process aimed at promoting environmentally and socially responsible practices. While the state does not require certification for vineyards to label their wines as “sustainable,” organizations like Sustainability in Practice (SIP) provide essential support in developing conservation plans.
Beth Vukmanic, Executive Director of SIP, explained that the program guides growers in implementing strategies for water conservation, habitat preservation, and ethical business management. “They must demonstrate a comprehensive conservation plan for their properties, including winter cover crops that prevent erosion and enrich the soil,” Vukmanic noted.
This year, SIP has certified over 10 vineyards in the region, including Alamo Creek Ranch, Foxen Vineyard and Winery, and Mirabella Vineyard, highlighting a growing commitment to sustainability in the wine industry.
