The Black Country, renowned for its rich brewing heritage, continues to be a hub for quality beer production. Breweries have long been part of the region’s landscape, filling the air in towns like Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, and Wolverhampton with the familiar scents of hops and yeast, offering a diverse range of beers beloved by locals.
In light of the recent news surrounding the potential closure of Banks’s Brewery in Wolverhampton, the Express & Star is committed to supporting local breweries. Our “Backing Our Breweries” campaign seeks to highlight the thriving businesses still producing exceptional beers, from Aldridge to Smethwick.
As part of this initiative, we take a closer look at Fixed Wheel Brewery—a microbrewery with big ambitions and an impressive track record of producing standout beers, such as the Blackheath Stout, which won the prestigious title of CAMRA’s West Midlands Regional Champion Beer of Britain in 2018.
Founded in 2014 by cycling and brewing enthusiasts Scott Povey and Sharon Bryant, Fixed Wheel Brewery operates from a modest unit at Long Lane Trading Estate in Blackheath. Povey, who spent 20 years as an auto electrician, explains that the idea for the brewery sparked during a weekend at a major track cycling event in Belgium.
“I’ve been passionate about cycling since childhood,” Povey says. “I’ve raced BMX bikes, time trials, and been heavily involved in cycling clubs. It just made sense to combine my love of cycling with brewing.”
The brewery’s success story is a testament to the owners’ dedication and their ability to create beers that resonate with both casual drinkers and connoisseurs alike. Despite the challenges facing the brewing industry in these difficult financial times, Fixed Wheel Brewery continues to thrive, producing quality beers that are celebrated by the local community and beyond.
