Beer Twig Makes a Splash at Wrigley Field Hockey Events, Raking in $167,000 in Sales

by Kaia

The Beer Twig, a novel beverage container shaped like a hockey stick, enjoyed a successful debut during recent hockey games at Chicago’s iconic Wrigley Field. The product, created by Sam McGee, inventor of the popular Beer Bat, saw strong sales during the NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve and the Frozen Confines Big Ten Hockey Series held January 3-4.

According to McGee, 3,200 beer sticks were sold during the Winter Classic and another 1,200 during the Frozen Zone. The sale marked the complete sale of the inventory ordered by Wrigley Field and venue concessionaire Levy. The beer sticks, which sell for 38 cents each, have sold more than 167,000 sticks during their public debut. McGee, who patented the product last year, expressed enthusiasm for its popularity.

Like its predecessor, the Beer Bat, the Beer Twig is made of polypropylene and can hold any liquid. However, its unique hockey stick design sets it apart. Notably, the beverage is consumed from the handle, as the blade of the stick does not hold liquid. Most of the Twigs sold at Wrigley Field featured branded Wrigley graphics, though 892 non-branded units were also sold at the same price, which included a display stand. McGee emphasized that the graphics were printed in full color, not applied as stickers, enhancing the product’s appeal.

Looking ahead, McGee is pursuing licensing agreements with the NHL to incorporate league and team logos, and eventually, player images. He is also in discussions with major beer companies, including Anheuser-Busch and Molson, about potential partnerships. Such deals could see beer brands purchasing Beer Twigs in bulk and distributing them as promotional items to sponsored teams, potentially reducing the retail price from the $38 charged at Wrigley Field.

The strong debut of the Beer Twig underscores its potential as a fan-favorite novelty item, with McGeye optimistic about its future in both sports venues and promotional markets.
