McLeod’s Brewery, an acclaimed brewery based in Waipu, Northland, is on the lookout for a talented and experienced Head Brewer to join its growing team. Founded in 2014, McLeod’s Brewery has become one of New Zealand’s most awarded breweries. In 2024, its Double IPA, Tropical Cyclone, was named Champion New Zealand Beer, and the brewery has twice been honored as Champion Medium Brewery. The brewery has earned a loyal following for its commitment to brewing exceptional beer, and now, they are seeking a skilled Head Brewer to help continue their success.
About the Role
The Head Brewer will play a central role in leading a passionate team of three, overseeing all aspects of beer production—from fermentation and cellaring to packaging and dispatching finished products. The role offers an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse range of beer styles, including the core range, barrel-aged Smugglers Bay collection, and seasonal creations. The successful candidate will have the chance to experiment with new recipes and brewing techniques, showcasing their creativity in the process.
Responsibilities include developing beer recipes, managing the production process, purchasing ingredients, and collaborating with suppliers. The Head Brewer will also oversee the brewery’s management software and ensure the team adheres to the highest standards in beer production.
McLeod’s Brewery operates on a 6-day roster, with team members working four 10-hour shifts per week. The position is full-time and based at the brewery in Waipu, Northland.
About You
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of professional brewery experience, including time in a senior or leadership role. A deep understanding of beer styles, brewing techniques, and the entire brewing process—from fermentation to packaging—is essential. The Head Brewer must be creative, detail-oriented, and capable of developing innovative beer recipes while maintaining a clean and efficient brewing environment.
Key qualifications for the role include:
- Minimum 5 years of professional brewing experience, with senior or leadership experience
- Strong knowledge of beer styles, brewing techniques, and industry trends
- Expertise in lab equipment, including centrifuge operation
- Excellent attention to detail and high standards of work
- Physical stamina to meet the demands of the role
- Effective leadership, time management, and communication skills
- Formal brewing qualifications (IBD certification or equivalent)
- Valid NZ Forklift License and Driver’s License
