A man who callously disposed of his empty beer cans into a picnic area at a Mosgiel park, only to drive away, found himself returning under the watchful eye of the police to rectify the mess he had created.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, representing the Dunedin police, recounted the incident that unfolded at the Puddle Alley Reserve carpark around 4 pm last Saturday. Reports had emerged of an individual consuming canned beer within his car and recklessly tossing the empty containers into the picnic area where families were attempting to enjoy a tranquil afternoon meal.
Regrettably, by the time law enforcement arrived on the scene, the man had fled. However, their persistence led them to locate the 33-year-old individual at a nearby address.
Upon apprehension, the man underwent breathalyzer testing, which revealed a breath alcohol level of 600mcg, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 250mcg.
To make amends for his actions, Mosgiel police transported the man back to Puddle Alley Reserve and required him to clean up the litter of beer cans he had left strewn across the picnic area.
In addition to the cleanup duty, the man now faces a court summons for driving under the influence of alcohol, underscoring the consequences of irresponsible behavior that disrupts public spaces and endangers others.
