Spier Wine Farm Unveils New Visual Identity Reflecting Sustainability and Regenerative Practices

by Kaia

Spier Wine Farm, one of South Africa’s most historic wine estates, is marking a significant moment in its 333-year history with the unveiling of a reimagined visual identity. The new design symbolizes the farm’s commitment to regenerative farming practices, sustainability, and excellence in all facets of its operations.

Evolving with Purpose: A Reflection of Global Change

The move toward a refreshed visual identity comes at a time of global environmental and social challenges. Climate change, waste management issues, and water shortages have prompted consumers to demand greater transparency and responsibility from businesses. For Spier, the idea of change has been central for decades, and their latest shift in branding is a natural evolution of this long-standing philosophy.

“We didn’t set out to rebrand,” said Kathryn Cilliers, Marketing Director at Spier. “Rather, the profound changes across our farm demanded a visual identity that truly reflects who we are today.”

A History of Stewardship and Sustainability

Spier’s journey toward sustainability began in earnest in 1993, when the Enthoven family took stewardship of the 620-hectare estate. Under their leadership, Spier has moved beyond being a wine producer to become a model of regenerative business practices. The farm’s approach to sustainability includes innovative techniques such as using chicken feathers for soil cover and diverting nearly all of its waste into energy.

These efforts have earned Spier global recognition, including the Drinks Business Amorim Biodiversity Award in 2019 and the Drinks Business Green Awards Ethical Award in 2022.

A Natural Evolution: Spier’s Ongoing Transformation

The visual update is just one part of a broader transformation at Spier. The farm’s wine portfolio is being repackaged, and in March 2025, a newly renovated Spier Hotel will open its doors, offering a blend of modern comfort and indigenous garden designs. The Cowshed Shop, which opened in 2024, offers a curated space for locally sourced products.

Heritage Meets Modernity in New Logo

The updated logo draws inspiration from Spier’s heritage, particularly from the gable crest that appeared on its original wine labels. Designer Francois Rey, of Monday Design, reimagined this iconic symbol with a more refined aesthetic that blends craftsmanship and contemporary design, creating a mark that honors the farm’s history while embracing the future.

“This thoughtful evolution of our logo is a reflection of who we are at our core: a farm with deep roots firmly focused on the future,” said Cilliers.

Spier’s Continued Commitment to Excellence

As one of South Africa’s leading wine brands, Spier continues to receive widespread acclaim. The farm has won several accolades, including the 2025 Best of Wine Tourism Award for Art & Culture and Die Burger’s 2024 Readers’ Choice awards for Best Child-Friendly Winery, Best Wine Farm Experience, and Best Wine Farm Eateries.

The updated visual identity is more than just a new look; it is a testament to Spier’s ongoing transformation. By integrating sustainability and excellence into every aspect of its operations, Spier is demonstrating that mindful change, rooted in heritage, can be a powerful force for good in an increasingly complex world.
