California’s craft beer scene is renowned for its diversity and innovation, with local brewers earning prestigious accolades such as gold medals at the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship in Ohio. Among these, Pliny the Younger has developed a cult-like following among beer enthusiasts. Yet, when it comes to the most popular beer in the Golden State, it’s not a craft brew that reigns supreme.
According to a new report from Coffeeness, shared by Visual Capitalist, Coors is the most searched beer brand in California. The report, which analyzed search interest across 50 states and the District of Columbia using Google Trends data, highlights the national curiosity surrounding beer brands, though it does not measure sales or consumption figures.
Coffeeness, in collaboration with YouGov Ratings, focused its analysis on mainstream beer brands, ensuring that the data reflected broad consumer interest rather than niche, local brews. The report noted that online search interest serves as a proxy for consumer curiosity, engagement, and information-seeking behavior.
National Beer Trends
Nationwide, Miller took the top spot as the most searched beer brand in 29 states and the District of Columbia, while Coors ranked highest in eight states, primarily in the South and Southwest. Other notable brands included Guinness, which dominated in Georgia, New Jersey, and South Carolina, while Heineken, Busch, Budweiser, and Bud Light were each the most popular in two states.
Interestingly, Blue Moon was the leading brand in Colorado, and Corona topped the charts in Connecticut. While craft beers like Pliny the Younger hold a loyal fan base, the report underscores that mass-market brands remain dominant in online search trends across the U.S.
This data offers valuable insights into beer consumer behavior, showing not just which brands are popular, but also where the curiosity and brand engagement lie.
