According to data from the Brewers Association, craft beer sales witnessed a 2% decline during the first half of 2023, marking a significant departure from the industry’s consistent growth over the years. Notably, this is the first time a decline has been recorded, except for the pandemic-impacted year of 2020.

The factors contributing to the recent dip in craft beer sales are multifaceted, encompassing a range of issues, including the lingering disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the unsustainable rapid growth experienced in recent years, inflationary pressures, and evolving consumer preferences geared towards healthier living. Yet, one simple but significant reason underlies this challenging period for the craft beer sector: people are increasingly turning to other alcoholic beverages.

Bart Watson, the Chief Economist at the Brewers Association, elucidated this trend during a webinar that unveiled the findings of the Association’s mid-year survey. “The primary reason cited for the decline in craft beer consumption isn’t a newfound focus on health or budget-consciousness,” he emphasized, “it’s the fact that consumers are gravitating toward alternative alcoholic beverages.”

Survey respondents mentioned various additional reasons for reducing their craft beer intake, such as adopting a healthier overall lifestyle, curtailing calorie consumption, embracing non-alcoholic options, economic concerns, and more. However, these rationales paled in comparison to the dominant trend of consumers choosing different forms of alcohol, accounting for at least double the frequency of these other concerns, as indicated by the survey results.
