Marco Felluga, a pioneering figure renowned for his creation of exceptional white wines that significantly elevated the prominence of Italy’s Collio region within Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, passed away on April 3 at the age of 96.
Recognized as a visionary within the wine community, Felluga’s impact extended far beyond his own vineyards. Silvio Jermann of Jermann winery described Felluga, alongside fellow vintners Count Douglas Attems and Mario Schiopetto, as instrumental in enhancing the quality of wines originating from the Collio region. Together, they spearheaded efforts to attain DOC status for the appellation and establish a consortium of regional wine producers, ultimately propelling Collio onto the global stage. Jermann emphasized Felluga’s profound influence on shaping the modern Collio and garnering international acclaim for Friuli’s viticulture.
Felluga’s passing preceded the formalization of a strategic alliance between his family and the Tommasi family of Valpolicella. The Tommasis have acquired a majority stake in the Felluga family’s winery and two estates, Marco Felluga and Russiz Superiore. Despite this change, Marco’s granddaughter, Ilaria, will continue to lead the wineries, ensuring continuity in the family’s legacy.
Rooted in a rich tradition of winemaking dating back to the 1800s, the Felluga family relocated to the Collio region following World War II, where Marco and his brother Livio established their respective wineries. Marco founded his namesake estate in 1956, pioneering techniques aimed at enhancing wine quality in the region. Notably, he challenged conventional practices by prioritizing lower yields and implementing innovative vine training methods. However, his most enduring legacy lies in his commitment to crafting white wines capable of aging gracefully, a departure from the prevailing trend of producing youthful, crisp wines.
In a strategic move reflective of his foresight, Felluga expanded his holdings in 1967 with the acquisition of the Russiz Superiore estate, underscoring his dedication to producing wines of longevity. Here, he continued his emphasis on meticulous aging processes, crafting wines such as the Collio Russiz Superiore Col Disôre and the Pinot Bianco Collio Russiz Superiore Riserva, known for their complexity and longevity.
Brian Larky, founder and CEO of Dalla Terra Winery Direct, hailed Felluga’s unwavering commitment to promoting Friuli’s wines, particularly within the American market. Despite the challenges, Marco remained steadfast in his mission to showcase the unique terroir of Friuli and the quality of Marco Felluga wines.
Following the passing of his son Roberto in 2021, Ilaria assumed leadership of the family’s estates. Now, with the support of the Tommasi family, she looks forward to continuing her grandfather’s legacy, guided by the same principles of excellence and dedication to Friuli’s winemaking traditions.
Massimo Zorzettig, co-owner of Tunella winery, praised Felluga as a visionary whose dedication to excellence significantly contributed to the enhancement of Friuli’s viticultural landscape. He lauded Felluga as one of the patriarchs of Friulian wine, highlighting his pivotal role in elevating the region’s reputation and quality standards.
