Recent figures from NielsenIQ have unveiled the UK off-trade market for Tequila, which has surged to £35 million (US$44 million), marking a robust 12.5% growth in value and a 6.6% increase in volume year-on-year. Online sales of Tequila saw an even more pronounced growth of 16.4%.
Comparatively, data from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) reported Tequila off-trade sales at £33 million (US$39 million) in the year ending March 2022, highlighting a significant uptick in consumer demand.
NielsenIQ’s insights further indicated that ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, including Tequila-based options, are among the fastest-growing segments within the beer, wine, and spirits category, amassing a value of £424 million (US$537 million) in the off-trade market. RTDs containing Tequila saw a remarkable surge of 150.5%.
Josh Self from NielsenIQ will delve deeper into these findings at Imbibe Live in London, presenting on the agave category during a session titled ‘The Trends in Retail to Watch: NielsenIQ on Beers, Wines & Spirits’ from July 1-2. This year, Imbibe Live will introduce the Campo de Agave theatre, dedicated to agave spirits, featuring masterclasses and talks from industry experts like Deano Moncrieffe of Hacha, Gaby Moncada of Speciality Brands, and Matthias Ingelmann of Kol Mezcaleria.
Shona Thomson, exhibition manager at Imbibe Live, emphasized the growing popularity of Tequila and the opportunities it presents for both on-trade and off-trade sectors. The Campo de Agave theatre aims to equip operators and retailers with essential knowledge on stocking, merchandising, and serving Tequila, while offering attendees a chance to explore and engage with leading brands in the category.
The initiative reflects a strategic effort to support the burgeoning interest in Tequila and enhance consumer experiences within the vibrant spirits market.
