BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. (WNDU) – On a warm summer day, it’s a haven for those wanting to relax, sip a cool glass of wine, and enjoy the views.
Lemon Creek Winery is packed full of flavor and history.
“We opened in 1984, this is our 40th anniversary,” said Jeff Lemon, owner and winemaker.
But it all started before that. Jeff Lemon is a sixth-generation farmer.
“There is an actual Lemon Creek, and it’s named after the family,” Lemon said. “My great-great-great-uncle had a sawmill on a creek in Berrien Springs, and it became known as ‘Lemon’s Creek.’ And the road then was named after the family.”
Through the years, the Lemon family grew a variety of grapes and decided to start making wine. In 1984, they opened Lemon Creek Winery.
“The wine industry really kicked off in the 90s, but [we are] the second winery in southwest Michigan, behind Tabor Hill.”
And today, it’s still family-operated with 26 different grape varieties on 170 acres of land.
“Over the years, I’ve seen kids that were coming here 35, 40 years ago are now bringing their kids here and even one step beyond that,” Lemon said.
It’s become a destination for many. Lemon Creek Winery was even featured on the popular Netflix series “Love is Blind.”
“We’ve seen people from all over the United States,” said Jerardo Bocanegra, assistant winemaker. “Furthest, probably California and even New York. People are recognizing our area as an established wine area.”
Lemon Creek Winery is hosting a Vintage Blues Bash on Sunday, July 28, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be food trucks, live music, free parking, and a $10 entry fee.
