Women in Wine, a pioneering enterprise fully owned, controlled, and managed by women, has launched a new range of wines exclusively available at Shoprite and Shoprite LiquorShops across the country.
Beverly Farmer, co-founder and CEO of the Stellenbosch-based Women in Wine, emphasized that the partnership with Shoprite transcends mere accessibility. “It’s a collaboration that celebrates diversity, innovation, and the power of black women-owned enterprises. We’re deeply thankful to Shoprite for embracing small businesses like ours,” said Farmer.
Founded by 20 professional black women with diverse backgrounds in viticulture, Women in Wine aims to challenge the traditionally male-dominated wine industry and create opportunities for women, including vineyard workers and their families.
Women in Wine advocates for women’s inclusion in leadership roles and has established the Farmworker Women’s Trust. This initiative collaborates with strategic partners to provide on-the-job training opportunities, benefiting approximately 200 female vineyard workers.
One success story is Ursula Vriesenhof, who began as a picker on a farm, progressed to cellar work, and eventually moved into an administrative role. “I was exposed to industry events and training, which significantly boosted my confidence and career prospects,” Vriesenhof shared. “Now, I’ve come full circle; I’m back in the vineyards, but this time as a supervisor.”
In December 2023, Women in Wine reached a significant milestone by securing a listing with Shoprite for its Natural Sweet range. This collection includes red, white, and rosé wines, offering customers a refreshing wine experience characterized by natural sweetness and versatile flavors. “Our wines embody freshness and fruitiness, making them perfect for everyday enjoyment,” said Farmer.
“Each bottle tells a story, urging you to savor and elevate each moment. Our labels, developed in partnership with Shoprite, honor the wine’s character and craftsmanship, celebrating the invaluable role of female producers,” Farmer added.
