The Wold Top Brewery, situated in Wold Newton on the Yorkshire coast, is celebrating a remarkable achievement after securing three awards at the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) North East Regional Keg Awards, held in Sheffield last week.
The brewery’s Landmark Lager and Headland Red each won gold awards, while their new beer, Sun Drench, was awarded silver. Landmark Lager triumphed in the Session Lager Category, and Headland Red took gold in the Amber, Brown, and Red Ale Category. Sun Drench, a New Zealand Pale Ale, was recognized as the runner-up in the Pale Ale Category.
In what the judges described as a rare and incredible feat, Headland Red not only won its category but also received a second gold medal as the overall winner of the competition. Landmark Lager was a close runner-up in this category. Both Headland Red and Landmark Lager will advance to the national SIBA competition at BeerX in March 2025, representing the North East region.
Alex Balchin, Brewery Director at Wold Top, expressed his delight at the results: “Our team is dedicated to crafting excellent beers using Yorkshire-grown cereals and water from our farm’s borehole. It’s incredibly rewarding to have our beers recognized by fellow brewers and industry experts as award-winning.”
Balchin also highlighted the importance of supporting regional independent manufacturers and retailers, especially in challenging economic times. “We’re grateful to SIBA for facilitating this recognition and for supporting independent brewers like us,” he added.
About the Winning Beers:
Landmark Lager (4.2% ABV): A British lager featuring notes of honey, herbs, and lemon.
Headland Red (4.3% ABV): A red beer with a mellow, malty flavor.
Sun Drench: A New Zealand Pale Ale characterized by its fruity flavors.
The SIBA Independent Beer Awards, judged by peers and industry experts, represent the pinnacle of UK independent brewing. The awards celebrate the finest beers from across the country and are often regarded as the “Brewers’ Choice.”
Founded in 2003, Wold Top Brewery operates on the Mellor family farm at Hunmanby Grange near Filey. The brewery utilizes home-grown barley and water from its own borehole to produce a variety of cask, keg, and bottled beers available throughout Yorkshire and beyond.
