BUFFALO, NY — A new state law in New York is set to boost local distilleries by allowing the direct home shipment of spirits, cider, and mead. This change is expected to benefit businesses across Western New York and the state as a whole.
Buffalo Distilling Company, located on Seneca Street, has been a fixture in the local spirits scene since 2012. Known for its unique bourbons, whiskeys, vodkas, and other spirits crafted from regional ingredients, the company has built a reputation for quality. According to General Manager and Distiller Joe Mattimore, “We use all New York state grains in our products, with local honey and maple syrup. Everything comes from farms around here.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Buffalo Distilling Company was able to test direct home shipments of its Polish favorite Krupnick and a Bills Mafia-themed line of spirits. The New York State Liquor Authority allowed these shipments temporarily to offset losses from restricted sales. Mattimore notes, “It was pretty successful. Shipping spirits can be challenging due to the need for signatures upon delivery, but top shipping companies have policies to manage that.”
Mattimore also played a role in lobbying for the resumption of this shipping policy, which had been discontinued in 2021. With the new law reinstated, Governor Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers have greenlit the direct shipment of spirits once again. “Currently, we can only sell within New York State borders. This change allows us to reach customers nationwide, potentially shipping to around 39 states,” Mattimore explains.
The ability to ship directly to consumers is not only a significant boost for Buffalo Distilling Company but also opens new opportunities for growth. As their spirits age in a warehouse full of barrels, Mattimore points out, “Collectors of bourbon are always looking for something unique and limited. Our products, made from local ingredients and distilled and bottled on-site, offer just that.”
The expansion of direct shipments could lead to increased job opportunities. Mattimore suggests, “The response to our direct shipments may create additional jobs, depending on order volume.”
This new legislation marks a pivotal moment for New York’s distilleries, offering them a broader market and the potential for significant growth in the coming years.
