Napa Valley continues to capture the hearts of wine enthusiasts, and this fall, three new wineries are making their mark: Annulus, Arborum Napa Valley, and Palisades Canyon. With over 1,000 existing wine brands in the region, these newcomers promise to enhance our cellars and delight our taste buds.
Annulus is launching with three wines, including two single-vineyard options and a Napa Valley cuvée. The wines are crafted by renowned Napa winemaker Nigel Kinsman and consulting enologist Michel Rolland. Kinsman, formerly of Araujo Estate and now involved with several other labels, has been part of the project since its inception in 2019. He secured grapes from historic sites like Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard in Oakville and Beckstoffer Las Piedras in St. Helena. Rolland joined the team in 2023, bringing his expertise in blending.
The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Annulus features grapes from Stags Leap District and Diamond Mountain. This wine offers aromas of raspberry and Mediterranean herbs, with flavors of black cherry and blackberry cobbler, finishing with a soft note of cigar box.
Arborum Napa Valley, founded by Caren and Nick Orum, presents a Proprietary Red blend from its organic St. Helena Vineyard and a white blend from Coombsville. Winemaker Andy Erickson, known for his work with Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate, oversees production. The Orums acquired the 20-acre property in 2013 and have committed to donating 100% of net earnings to local charities, with a goal of $1 million from the 2024 releases.
The 2021 Napa Valley Proprietary Red from Arborum is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in oak for 28 months. It features aromas of ripe cherry and spices, complemented by flavors of raspberry and clove, leading to a long, savory finish.
Palisades Canyon, located in Calistoga, offers its first releases, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Chenin Blanc. Fourth-generation winemaker Graeme MacDonald, who also works at his family’s To Kalon property, crafts these wines. Owners Felicia Woytak and Steve Rasmussen found their 796-acre property after years of searching, with a focus on organic farming and minimal intervention.
The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Palisades Canyon combines Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, showcasing minerality from the volcanic soil. The wine presents aromas of wild blackberries and black currants, with flavors of black cherry and dark chocolate, enveloped in opulent tannins.
These new wineries not only bring fresh talent to Napa Valley but also a commitment to quality and community, making them exciting additions to the region’s vibrant wine landscape.
