City’super, Hong Kong’s premier lifestyle specialty store, has kicked off its inaugural Georgian wine promotion, available in six selected locations across the city starting September 19.

The launch event took place at the Southside store, featuring a media and trade tasting led by Master of Wine Debra Meiburg, founder of the Georgian Wine Ambassador education program for Asia. The tasting highlighted qvevri wines, showcasing Georgia’s unique traditional winemaking method. A large, egg-shaped clay vessel, commonly buried underground, was prominently displayed in the store’s wine cellar.

The promotion features over ten different wines, with a special emphasis on amber wine, also known as orange wine. This distinctive Georgian wine is crafted from white grapes fermented with their skins, a hallmark of the region’s winemaking tradition. Alongside amber wines, a variety of white, red, and rosé options are available.

In an interview with Vino Joy News, Meiburg underscored the importance of amber wines, advocating for greater recognition of this style. “We should be making white wine with grape skins; this is the missing piece of the puzzle,” she stated, noting its rising popularity among young drinkers in Asia. “Young, trendy people are excited about it; it has a vigorous texture that stands out.”

Meiburg also highlighted the compatibility of amber wines with Asian cuisine, particularly meats like pork and chicken, which are staples in the region.

Yvonne Wang, senior wine buyer at City’super, emphasized the campaign’s role in introducing Georgian wines—revered as the “cradle of wine” with an 8,000-year history—to a broader audience. “We aim to elevate the popularity of Georgian wines through retail, providing visibility to all customers, regardless of their wine knowledge.”

The promotion also introduces two Georgian wineries to the Hong Kong market: Pi and Baia. Pi Winery’s Akura, with a limited release of 600 bottles, is priced at HKD 270 in City’super.

Running from September 19 to October 15, 2024, the promotion includes wine tastings at City’super’s wine cellars every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Customers purchasing three bottles will receive a 5% discount, 10% for six bottles, and a 15% discount for purchases of 12 bottles or more.
