CARLSBAD, CA — On Thursday, September 12, more than 160 leaders from business, education, and nonprofit sectors gathered at the Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa for A Step Beyond’s (ASB) 4th Annual Wine-Tasting Benefit, themed “Creating Bright Futures.” The event successfully raised over $265,000, marking a decade of impactful service to youth in North San Diego County.
ASB is an Escondido-based nonprofit that offers a 10-year afterschool program designed to empower underserved youth through dance education, academic support, and family services. Currently, the organization serves over 230 students from Escondido and San Marcos, with all members of its first two graduating classes—18 students—having successfully completed high school and been accepted into various college and career programs.
The evening featured a program with remarks from ASB graduate Heather Rodriguez, now a student at California State University San Marcos, who shared her inspiring journey. Attendees enjoyed an array of wines and gourmet food while learning more about ASB’s mission.
ASB employs a research-based career education initiative known as the “World of Work,” which exposes students to diverse career opportunities and is integrated across all grades. The program aims to equip students for success beyond academics, focusing on their overall personal development.
A Step Beyond also provides continuous mentorship, scholarships, and emergency financial support to its graduates. Its unique ten-year commitment offers after-school services to youth in grades 3 through 12, at no cost to families. The program’s emphasis on dance and expressive arts is backed by research indicating improved cognitive abilities and understanding of STEM subjects.
In 2023, ASB reported that 98% of its students felt their participation led to greater success in school, while 99% noted an increase in homework completion due to the program. Furthermore, 98% believed ASB enhanced their confidence, and 92% found that dancing improved their collaborative skills.
