With over 1,700 wineries across the country, 132 have modernized their facilities to meet tourist-friendly standards, ensuring excellent services and well-trained staff. The National Wine Tourism Committee, chaired by Mary Triantafyllopoulou, aims to further integrate wine tourism into Greece’s broader tourism framework, fostering a culture of food tourism that includes local product tastings and visits to production sites.
Key regions for wine tourism activities include the Dodecanese, Cyclades, Crete, Kefalonia, Evia, and Nemea, where tourism typically spans six months. Efforts are now focused on extending this season year-round and expanding benefits to additional areas.
An increasing number of Greek tourists are reserving winery visits in advance, drawn by the comprehensive experience of wine tasting, engaging with local winemakers, and exploring the region’s rich history and traditions. This form of tourism also supports local industries by promoting products like cheese and honey through tastings.
The influence of wine tourism reaches beyond Greece’s borders, as international visitors become advocates for Greek wines upon returning home. Triantafyllopoulou notes, “When tourists see Greek wines in their local markets, they remember the experience and choose to buy, creating 330,000 potential ambassadors for our wines.”
