The third annual Oktoberfest at Starlight Ranch is gearing up for an exciting weekend, promising a delightful mix of authentic German cuisine, live music, and family-friendly activities. Tickets are currently on sale.

This year’s festival, hosted by the Big Texan Steak Ranch, is expected to be the largest yet, with organizers anticipating around 1,800 attendees—an increase from last year’s crowd of 1,200. Festivalgoers will have the opportunity to enjoy 12 imported kegs of Paulaner and Spaten Oktoberfest beer, served in traditional style. Guests can savor these brews in authentic German steins, which hold a full liter. As the steins are likely to sell out quickly, early arrival is advised for those hoping to secure one.

“The food is always the biggest hit,” said Bobby Lee, owner of the Big Texan and one of the event organizers. “Many people don’t realize they enjoy German food until they try it. We add a little Texas twist to make it something everyone can appreciate.”

Lee highlighted the commitment to authenticity, stating that the German beers served at the event are directly imported, ensuring a genuine experience for attendees. “We wanted to make sure it’s the real deal,” he explained. “People can taste the difference between the German brews and more commercial American versions.”

In addition to food and drinks, the festival will feature a performance by the Polkatimers, a musical group that has become a staple at the event. They will lead attendees in traditional polka dances and teach lesser-known German dance routines.

Among the evening’s highlights is the much-anticipated Dachshund dog race, where costumed dachshunds compete for the title of fastest “weenie dog” in Amarillo. Organized by the Amarillo SPCA, the race aims to raise funds for local animal care and has gained popularity, with around 30 dogs expected to participate this year.

“If you want to witness the funniest thing in Amarillo, come watch the weenie dog race,” Lee said. “These energetic little dogs bring a lot of surprises when the gates open.”

A unique partnership with the Amarillo Police Department also enhances the Oktoberfest experience. Officers assist with cooking and serving food, fostering community spirit while raising funds for police initiatives. Initially a separate event, the police picnic merged with Oktoberfest in its first year, and officers now play a crucial role in the festival’s success. Last year, over $5,000 was raised for the Amarillo Police Officers Association, alongside $1,000 for the Amarillo SPCA.

“We offered to do the food for them, and it just took off from there,” Lee remarked. “Now it’s one of their biggest days, and we love being a part of it.”

Festivalgoers can indulge in three distinct styles of bratwurst, alongside freshly baked pretzels and sauerkraut, which is made from Lee’s family recipe. Lee expressed confidence that even those skeptical of traditional German dishes will be pleasantly surprised.

“People often think they don’t like sauerkraut until they try ours. We sell out of it every year,” he stated.

Oktoberfest at Starlight Ranch has garnered attention not only locally but also from across Texas, with visitors traveling from cities like Dallas, Austin, and Keller, drawn by the allure of authentic German fare and a rich cultural experience.

“This isn’t something people expect to see in Amarillo,” Lee noted. “But we have people who plan their trips around it, and each year, we see more and more out-of-towners.”

With its unique blend of traditional German food, lively music, and entertaining competitions like the weenie dog race, Oktoberfest at Starlight Ranch has rapidly become a highlight of Amarillo’s fall season.
