Joe Grossmann, the visionary behind the celebrated burger chain Patty & Bun, has embarked on a fresh culinary journey by venturing into the pub sector with the revitalization of The Watermans Arms, a prominent pub nestled in south London.
Inspired by a transformative road trip across the United States, Grossmann established Patty & Bun in London in 2013. Now, a decade later, he is poised to make his inaugural foray into the world of pubs with the grand relaunch of The Watermans Arms this coming September.
The decision to take on The Watermans Arms was deeply rooted in Grossmann’s personal connection to the area where he spent his formative years. The establishment, located near his childhood haunts, resonates with his lifelong vision. With unwavering determination, Grossmann is set to transform the pub into a unique and iconic culinary haven, imbued with an inviting ambiance and a nod to the locale’s heritage.
Reflecting on his new endeavor, Grossmann shared his excitement, stating, “The Watermans Arms has been a longstanding dream of mine. The allure of creating something truly exceptional within the neighborhood that raised me was simply irresistible. The venue boasts remarkable architectural elements, including soaring ceilings, exquisite original windows and doors, as well as a balcony that offers scenic views of the water. Such a location is a rarity in London, and it holds a distinct and unmistakable charm.”
Anticipating a harmonious fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, The Watermans Arms will feature an expansive outdoor dining area along its frontage, catering to up to 14 patrons. Moreover, a private dining space on the first floor, accommodating up to 16 guests, is poised to provide an intimate and exclusive experience.
Taking the helm of the kitchen is accomplished head chef Sam Andrews, renowned for his culinary leadership at esteemed establishments such as the Camberwell Arms and Soho’s Ducksoup. Overseeing the front-of-house operations is seasoned general manager Simon Walsh, who previously helmed the Anglesea Arms in Hammersmith.
Grossmann expressed his confidence in the expertise of his team, remarking, “The project is in exceptional hands with Sam and Simon leading the charge. These two remarkable individuals, whom I’ve had the privilege of knowing and admiring for some time, are the driving force behind this venture.”
Richard Thomas, director at property agency Shelley Sandzer, which facilitated the deal on behalf of the landlord, lauded Grossmann’s vision, emphasizing his ability to infuse the establishment with a genuine sense of community pride. Thomas stated, “Rooted in his local upbringing in Barnes, Joe Grossmann brings forth the fervor and enthusiasm of a true local champion to The Watermans Arms. Leveraging his extensive experience in the hospitality industry, this new venture is poised to follow a trajectory of success. As it unfolds, The Watermans Arms is positioned to become a cornerstone of the neighborhood, seamlessly uniting both pub and restaurant elements to create an elevated yet familiar culinary haven.”
