by Kaia

The Napa Valley Community Foundation (NVCF), in collaboration with the Napa Valley Farmworker Foundation, has announced that Ana Ortega is the recipient of the 2024 El Futuro Educational Scholarship. This scholarship, established through a generous partnership with the Moulds Family, honors the memory of Steve Moulds, the Foundation’s late president, by promoting educational opportunities for emerging leaders in Napa’s wine industry.

The El Futuro Educational Scholarship specifically aids Napa County residents pursuing associate degrees in viticulture and/or enology at Napa Valley College or Santa Rosa Junior College. It recognizes students who exhibit outstanding dedication and ambition in their academic, community, or work endeavors.

Ana Ortega, this year’s awardee, exemplifies the commitment and resilience that the scholarship aims to support. As the daughter of immigrant parents, she is the first in her family to seek education beyond elementary school. Ana’s interest in the wine industry was sparked during her participation in the Napa Valley Farmworker Foundation’s Fields of Opportunity Summer Mentor Program, where she discovered her passion for viticulture. She has since gained valuable experience working with Gallo Vineyards, Rios Farming Co., and most recently Vino Farms LLC, all while studying at Napa Valley College.

Looking ahead, Ana is preparing to transfer to UC Davis next year to major in Viticulture and Enology, continuing her journey in a field she deeply loves. The El Futuro Scholarship will provide her with essential financial support for up to three years, enabling her to complete her degree and further her career in the wine industry.

“It’s nice to know there are people who care and are there as a support system,” Ana stated. “Since I’m an only child, sometimes I feel like I have no one to teach me or share these resources. It was a huge relief to know that I’ll be getting help to pay for my school.”

“Steve believed in the transformative power of education, and Ana Ortega’s story beautifully reflects the impact he hoped to create for future generations of Napa’s wine industry leaders,” said Sonya DeLuca, Executive Director of the Napa Valley Farmworker Foundation.

Lupe Reyes, NVCF’s Director of Grants and Scholarships, expressed, “Ana’s determination and passion are precisely why we are grateful for the existence of the El Futuro Educational Scholarship. We are committed to helping students like her achieve their educational goals and contribute meaningfully to Napa Valley’s agricultural heritage.”

The El Futuro Educational Scholarship not only nurtures the aspirations of students like Ana but also strengthens the Napa Valley wine industry by investing in the next generation of skilled and passionate leaders.

“It has been an honor to work with the Napa Valley Farmworker Foundation and the Napa Valley Community Foundation to help young people realize their dreams of higher education,” said Betsy Moulds of Moulds Family Vineyard, Steve’s wife.

Community members interested in supporting local youth passionate about the wine industry are encouraged to contribute to the El Futuro Scholarship fund. Your support can help students like Ana achieve their goals and build a brighter future for the Napa Valley community.
