In a landmark partnership that has been over a year in the making, award-winning breweries Northern Monk and Timothy Taylor have announced the release of their collaborative stout, Northern Rising. The new brew will be available in cask and keg formats at Northern Monk’s and Timothy Taylor’s venues, as well as in pubs throughout the UK. Additionally, it will be offered in 440ml nitro stout cans, accessible in supermarkets and online.
Crafted with roast barley and crystal malt, Northern Rising is characterized as a ‘unity stout’ with a rich, malt-forward profile and a satisfying chocolate flavor. The blend also includes Golden Promise malt, a staple of Timothy Taylor’s renowned cask ales, contributing to the beer’s full body and pleasing mouthfeel.
Russell Bisset, co-founder and managing director of Northern Monk, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We’ve been huge fans of Timothy Taylor’s for many years, and a collaboration with them has always been on our bucket list. This project stems from when we first floated the idea of working together,” he stated.
Bisset elaborated on the brewing process, noting, “We settled on a beer style that’s 300 years old, originating in London and later made famous in Dublin. It has been an exciting challenge developing a stout together, especially since stouts are the fastest growing beer style in the UK. We’re stoked for people to try our take on a classic.”
Andy Leman, head brewer at Timothy Taylor, shared his pride in the collaboration, saying, “Northern Monk is a fellow Yorkshire brewery that we’ve been proud to call a friend for many years. This partnership has blended their craft beer credentials with our real ale expertise to produce Northern Rising, a truly delicious stout.”
Northern Rising will be available on cask or keg at both Timothy Taylor’s and Northern Monk venues and will be featured at the Keighley and Worth Valley Beer Festival, which runs until Sunday. The stout will also be launched in nitro stout cans at 400 Morrisons stores by the end of the month.
In a related development, Northern Monk has opened an ambitious new crowdfunding campaign, Join the Rising, seeking to raise £1 million. This initiative aims to fund three key projects: establishing a flagship Northern Monk venue in London, expanding the brewery to meet increasing demand and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, and transforming Northern Monk’s original brewery site, The Old Flax Store in Leeds, into the UK’s premier brewery visitor experience. Interested individuals can find more information and invest in the campaign online.
