Berg Brewing is poised to enhance Chambersburg, PA’s craft beer scene with its upcoming opening in a beautifully restored 4,000-square-foot, two-story building located at 100 S Main Street. The brewery will feature a main bar, brew house, and inviting dining space on the first floor, while a second bar on the upper level will accommodate overflow crowds and host a variety of events, including live music and indoor recreation leagues.
The brewery will operate a 3.5-barrel system, ensuring a steady supply of fresh beer while allowing for experimentation with diverse brewing styles. Berg Brewing plans to offer a broad selection of both American and European beer styles, including German/Czech lagers and Belgian ales. Among the anticipated offerings is the Springside Saison, along with various hoppy options like New England IPAs, West Coast IPAs, and Pale Ales. A standout will be the Frecon Gold Pale Ale, brewed with Tahoma hops sourced from just three miles away. Future plans also include a barrel-aging program focusing on wild-fermented beers and traditional European styles.
Complementing its beer selection, Berg Brewing will collaborate with a talented chef, whose identity will be revealed soon. This chef will curate a menu featuring fine dining entrees and shareable plates, drawing on their extensive culinary background, including training at Le Cordon Bleu and appearances on Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay.”
The brewery is located in a historic 19th-century building that was rebuilt after the 1864 burning of Chambersburg, a significant event during the Civil War. Previously home to a hardware store called “Sherk’s,” the site will neighbor the forthcoming “Neighbor’s Food Hall,” which aims to bring food vendors, shopping, music, and family-friendly entertainment to the community.
Berg Brewing is a family-operated venture, led by Kyle Underkoffler and his wife, Kayla. They are joined by Kyle’s brother, Adam Underkoffler, and his wife, Beth, along with Dan and Ali Crist, and Jason and Becki Patterson. This dedicated team combines expertise from various fields to bring their vision to life.
Kyle Underkoffler, who has been homebrewing for nearly 15 years, has refined his skills at several commercial breweries, including Roy Pitz Brewing in Chambersburg and Florida Ave Brewing in Tampa. His passion for brewing ignited during his service as a Marine musician from 2007 to 2011. After his military career, he studied Marketing at the University of Tampa and honed his brewing craft through a homebrew club.
The name “Berg” reflects Kyle’s family heritage, derived from their German last name “Unterkoffler,” which means “under-head.” “Berg,” translating to “mountain” in German, connects the brewery to both their ancestry and the local landscape, while also being a catchy name for patrons.
As Chambersburg prepares for the arrival of Berg Brewing, the community can look forward to a vibrant new destination for craft beer enthusiasts.
