Wine Fundraiser Aims to Raise $20,000 for Community Support

by Kaia

Texarkana, Texas — HandsOn Texarkana is inviting the community to step back into the roaring 1920s for an evening of wine, tapas, and live entertainment at its 16th annual Tapas & Wine Fundraiser. The event, set to take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday at the historic Collins Home at 1915 Olive Street, promises a unique celebration with optional 1920s attire for attendees.

The Collins Home, built in 1929, provides an ideal backdrop for the era-themed event, according to HandsOn Texarkana board member James Syler. “The building’s history inspired the theme,” said Syler. “This is truly a one-of-a-kind event, and we’re fortunate to have one of the nation’s greatest wine selections right here in Texarkana.”

The organization hopes to raise $20,000 through the fundraiser, with proceeds supporting its wide range of community services.

The evening will feature five courses of gourmet tapas paired with wines selected by Dr. David Whitten of The Beauty and Wellness Center. Whitten, a recognized wine expert with appearances on the Today Show, has crafted a special wine menu tailored to complement the dishes for the night. “Dr. Whitten has a depth of wine knowledge—he’s even written books on it,” said Syler. “The wines he’s selected will elevate each dish for a memorable experience.”

In addition to the food and wine, guests will enjoy live entertainment and have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, with bidding open to the public online.

Tapas & Wine is one of HandsOn Texarkana’s largest annual fundraisers, alongside the Texarkana Dragon Boat Race, which is held each spring. The funds generated play a critical role in sustaining the nonprofit’s mission to support the community through various volunteer-driven services.

“Funds from this event go directly toward fulfilling our mission, which includes helping vulnerable seniors access transportation for essential medical appointments,” Syler explained. “Many seniors in our area struggle to reach vital treatments, including chemotherapy and dialysis.” The organization also operates a food pantry, delivering food boxes to those in need. Currently, HandsOn Texarkana provides assistance to about 250 community members.

HandsOn Texarkana, which has served the community for over 50 years, operates independently without state or federal funding, relying on events like Tapas & Wine to continue its work in the region.
