NOLENSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Voters in Nolensville, Tennessee, overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure on Tuesday that will allow the sale of wine in grocery stores, with nearly 90% of residents backing the change.
The referendum reflects a growing desire for convenience, as residents expressed interest in purchasing wine alongside their groceries. Rob Ikard, President of the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association, praised the decision, noting that for many, “wine and food go together.” He told News 2 in June, “Shoppers don’t want to have to go to two different places to buy these two natural complements to each other.”
The newly passed measure will end the need for Nolensville residents to make separate stops at liquor stores to buy wine. “They wanted the convenience of being able to buy wine where they buy their food,” Ikard said.
The process to bring the issue to voters took months, including a petition drive to get the referendum on the ballot. Once there, it passed by a wide margin.
As Nolensville continues to grow—both in population and in infrastructure—Ikard pointed out that new grocery stores, including Kroger and Publix, are under construction, though they may not open for another two years.
For now, local residents are looking forward to a future where they can pick up wine with their groceries as part of their daily shopping routine.
