Austria Implements Vineyard Classification After Decades of Lobbying by ÖTW Wineries

by Ivy

After a relentless lobbying effort spanning three decades, the Traditional Wine Estates of Austria (ÖTW) group, comprising premium wineries, has achieved a significant milestone as Austria becomes the second country, after France, to establish legal vineyard site classification.

The inception of ÖTW’s advocacy in 1991 aimed to establish a clear distinction between Austria’s exceptional single vineyards and the remainder. The arduous journey, supported by an investment exceeding €10 million, has culminated in the realization of their vision. Following a series of “official formalities,” the long-sought-after classification was officially confirmed this week, backed by a signature obtained on June 24, 2023.

The newly endorsed classification system introduces two designations for Austria’s premier vineyards: Erste Lage (Premier Cru) and Grosse Lage (Grand Cru).

Michael Moosbrugger, ÖTW’s national chair, acknowledges that the pursuit has been met with challenges along the way. Despite the uphill battle, he expresses pride in ÖTW’s pivotal role in advancing Austria’s wine industry. He emphasizes the collective responsibility of leading wineries to contribute positively to the industry’s growth. Moosbrugger pledges ÖTW’s ongoing commitment to overseeing the evolution of the legal classification, striving to prevent errors and ensuring its progress.

This achievement not only marks a significant milestone for Austria but also holds international significance. Prior to this development, France remained the sole country with legally recognized nationwide vineyard site classification.
