With the escalating threat of wildfires in California, prominent figures within Napa Valley’s wine industry are strategically acquiring coveted vineyard properties in Washington State as a safeguard.
Jackson Family Wines took a decisive step in this direction by expanding its influence in the Pacific Northwest during April 2022. The acquisition involved a 61-acre parcel in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley, enhancing the brand’s foothold in the region.
Securing this land from a larger 117-acre property owned by Abeja, the two estates are poised to jointly unveil the vineyard project’s name in the near future.
Strategically situated at the foothills of the Blue Mountains on the eastern flank of the Walla Walla Valley, the chosen vineyard site benefits from a cooler climate compared to the southern side. This cooler climate contributes to grapes boasting natural acidity and vibrant fruit flavors, further enhancing their appeal.
Observing this trend, additional wine producers are increasingly emulating this approach. Dan Wampfler, the winemaker at Abeja, perceives the interest displayed by Napa Valley wineries in Washington as a promising avenue for the state to augment its global prominence within the wine industry.
As the wildfire threat continues to loom over California’s wine country, this strategic expansion into Washington’s vineyard territory underscores the industry’s proactive efforts to secure a diversified and resilient future.
