Barcelona Wine Week Expands to Meet Growing Demand for 2025 Edition

by Kaia

Barcelona Wine Week (BWW), Spain’s flagship wine event, is set to expand significantly for its 2025 edition, responding to overwhelming growth since its debut in 2020. The event will now occupy two pavilions at the Montjuïc exhibition center of Fira de Barcelona from February 3 to 5, 2025. This strategic move aims to accommodate the fair’s success while maintaining its high standards and reputation.

Since its inception, the event has grown by 80%, with the exhibition space increasing to 9,500 square meters—31% larger than the previous year. The growing demand has sometimes led to overcrowding, notably in Pavilion 8 during the last two editions, prompting concerns despite positive feedback. According to surveys, 88% of professional attendees reported that the fair met or exceeded their expectations, and 73% of buyers confirmed making business deals during the event.

The fair’s organizers, led by BWW Director Céline Pérez, are keen to expand without compromising the event’s “excellence” and “unique egalitarian model.” Pérez emphasized that the goal is not to be the largest fair but the most representative one. Javier Pagés, president of BWW, stressed that the event serves as a global platform to showcase the quality and diversity of Spanish wines, benefiting the entire sector.

Focus on Tradition, Innovation, and Sustainability

At a recent presentation in Madrid, the 2025 edition was unveiled by ICEX Spain Export and Investment, which supports the internationalization of Spanish businesses. The 2025 event will spotlight wines made from old vineyards, some with vines between 50 and 300 years old, along with new wine prescription trends and the growing popularity of white wines. Sustainability and climate adaptation challenges will also be addressed, with dedicated sessions.

The event will feature around 1,100 exhibitors, a significant increase from the 952 wineries in 2024, and will represent 75 designations of origin (DOs) from 16 Spanish regions, up from 73 in 2024. Attendance is expected to reach 24,000 professionals, up from nearly 21,000 in the previous year.

Key Figures and Events in 2025

The fifth edition will include prominent winemakers such as Raúl Pérez from Bierzo, Ricard Rofes from Priorat, Fernando Mora from Frontonio Wineries, and Masters of Wine Tim Atkin, Doug Frost, and Pedro Ballesteros, among others. There will be a special session highlighting pre-phylloxera grape varieties from regions like Lanzarote, Pontevedra, and La Seca in Valladolid, with expert sommeliers, including Fernando Mayoral, guiding discussions.

A Wine Tasting Journey organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will also allow attendees to explore Spain’s rich selection of old vine wines through a self-guided tasting of more than 80 different references.

Other planned tastings include highlights from the Rías Baixas DO and a centenary celebration of Rioja. Notably, the event will continue to emphasize the rise of white wines, with sommeliers from prestigious restaurants like Paco Roncero in Madrid and Disfrutar in Barcelona leading tastings on the subject.

International and Domestic Buyer Focus

BWW 2025 will welcome 700 international buyers, 50 more than in 2024, with a 600,000 euro investment to bring in key players from markets such as the United States, Germany, China, and the United Kingdom. A domestic buyer program will also be in place to ensure strong attendance from Spanish industry professionals.

Despite the expansion into a second pavilion, some exhibitors have raised concerns over visitor flow between the two venues, as attendees will need to cross a central square to move from one pavilion to the other. Organizers have assured that the layout will ensure a balanced distribution of sectors and activities across both spaces.

Three Key Areas of Focus

As in previous editions, the exhibition space will be divided into three main areas:

BWW Lands: Wineries organized by designations of origin and other quality seals.

BWW Brands: Wineries, distributors, and producer associations.

BWW Complements & Tech: Companies offering wine-related equipment, services, and accessories.

Additionally, BWW Collectives and BWW Impulse will showcase smaller projects and micro-wineries.

With an expanded format, the 2025 edition of Barcelona Wine Week aims to balance growth with its commitment to quality, positioning itself as a premier event for the global wine industry.
