Employees of Anchor Brewing Company, the iconic San Francisco brewery, have embarked on a mission to buy the brewery after it announced its closure due to bankruptcy. Anchor Brewing, known for its craft beers and historic significance, faced this fate following its acquisition by Japanese brewing conglomerate Sapporo in 2017.
The brewery, which had faced closure before and was famously saved by Fritz Maytag in 1965, now has its employees taking the lead to rescue it. In late July, the unionized Anchor Brewing employees revealed plans to purchase the brewery and transform it into a co-op.
To raise the necessary funds for this endeavor, the Anchor Union launched a GoFundMe campaign on Monday, setting a goal of $50,000 in donations. The response has been overwhelming, with more than $25,000 raised within just one day of the campaign’s launch. The fundraising effort continues to grow rapidly.
This development demonstrates the strong community support and passion for preserving the legacy of Anchor Brewing Company. While challenges remain ahead, the employees’ commitment and the outpouring of donations have provided hope for a revival of this beloved brewery.
