Strangebird, the acclaimed craft brewery and restaurant located at 62 Marshall St. in Rochester, has been earning accolades throughout 2024, cementing its status as one of the country’s top beer destinations.
Earlier this year, Strangebird garnered recognition at several prestigious competitions, including a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival, as well as honors at the World Beer Cup and New York State Craft Beer Competition. Now, as the year draws to a close, the brewery has received even more national attention.
VinePair, a leading digital media company focused on drinks culture, recently included Strangebird in its list of “The 30 Best Breweries in the Country Right Now, According to Beer Pros (2024).” VinePair’s selection highlights Strangebird’s exceptional reputation for both its award-winning beers and its culinary offerings, which have also been lauded by local and statewide organizations. Writer Bryan Roth notes that while awards are a testament to Strangebird’s excellence, the brewery’s reputation as a “must-visit” spot for both locals and tourists is perhaps its most valuable asset.
The recognition of Strangebird places it among an elite group, alongside other renowned breweries such as West Kill Brewing in Greene County, Wild East Brewing Co. in Brooklyn, and Washington, D.C.’s Other Half D.C., which also operates locations in Canandaigua and East Bloomfield.
In addition to this honor, Strangebird’s Rode Vogel, a Flanders Red oak-aged ale, earned a spot on Wine Enthusiast’s list of “Top Beers of 2024.” The beer, described by writer John Holl as “expertly made,” is praised for its tart profile and vibrant raspberry and cherry notes, with a hint of balsamic vinegar that demonstrates the brewery’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of flavor. Other New York breweries recognized in Wine Enthusiast’s list include Brooklyn Brewery’s Fonio Rising imperial pilsner and Big Ditch Brewing Co.’s WNY Eclipse black IPA.
Strangebird’s rapid rise in the craft beer scene since its opening in 2021 can be attributed to the expertise of its founders. Micah Krichinsky, the brewery’s founder and head brewer, brings over 15 years of experience, having previously worked at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and graduating from the UC Davis master brewer’s program. Eric Salazar, Strangebird’s director of wood-aged beers, contributes 25 years of expertise, including his role in pioneering oak barrel aging at New Belgium Brewing Co.
With its blend of innovative brewing techniques and a celebrated food menu, Strangebird continues to make waves in the craft beer world, earning accolades that highlight its growing influence both locally and nationally.
