MATHIS, Texas — A century-old local cotton gin building in Mathis, Texas, once stood vacant and forgotten until two brothers, Jake and Nick Resio, along with their friend Jay Poole, embarked on a remarkable journey to rejuvenate it.
In 2020, these visionary entrepreneurs, in collaboration with the Mathis Economic Development Corporation, envisioned the transformation of the East Rockport Street property into a vibrant brewpub. Their ambitions were high, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily stalled their plans.
After more than a year of challenges and uncertainties, the trio reignited their dream to establish Mathis’ very first brewery company.
“Our project’s core objective is rooted in our passion for craft beer and the joy of gathering with family and friends,” explained Jake Resio. “However, our decision to undertake this endeavor within this historic building is primarily aimed at fostering economic growth within our community.”
The brewery, aptly named ‘Labora,’ draws its inspiration from the Latin word ‘labor,’ paying tribute to the diligent workers who operated the cotton gin facility at least 103 years ago.
The envisioned layout for the building includes front patio seating, convenient walk-up windows for orders, and sliding barn doors leading to an additional space for entertainment.
Jake Resio shared an anecdote from an elderly gentleman who used to visit the cotton gin with his grandfather via horse and buggy, dropping off cotton. “Even after the business closed decades ago, local residents continued to gather here after school, creating cherished memories,” he reminisced. “This building has been an integral part of our community for generations, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to revive that spirit in Mathis.”
Beyond bringing smiles to people’s faces, the founders aspire to create job opportunities for the community. Nick Resio emphasized their commitment to growth and community enrichment. “Our goal is to expand to the extent that we can provide meaningful employment opportunities here. This would significantly benefit our community, stimulate local commerce, and attract visitors from neighboring cities,” he stated.
The resurrection of this historic cotton gin facility into the ‘Labora’ brewery not only reflects the resilience and vision of these native entrepreneurs but also symbolizes a promising chapter in Mathis’s history, where heritage and innovation coalesce to bring prosperity and vitality to the town and its people.
