Strange Nature Gin, the super-premium New Zealand gin known for its unique Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc base, has been recognized as one of the top ten Gins of the Year at the 2024 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). The gin, which sponsors The Moodie Davitt Report’s popular Strange Predictions competition, continues to make waves in the spirits industry.
The IWSC Gin Panel praised Strange Nature Gin for its “wonderfully vibrant aromatic profile,” highlighting its burst of gooseberry and zesty citrus notes, complemented by a resinous juniper forefront. The panel described the gin as “pristine and bold on the palate,” with a juicy grape base that transitions into a finish blending bright Sauvignon Blanc grapes and freshly ground coffee. The judges concluded their review with a single word: “Marvellous!”
Since its debut in travel retail in 2022, Strange Nature Gin has gained significant traction, solidifying its position as a standout in the competitive spirits market. Its recognition at the IWSC further cements its reputation as a leader in the super-premium gin category.
Olivier Ward, a member of the IWSC Spirits Judging Committee and Chair of its Gin Panel, commented on the broader trends shaping the gin industry. “Globally, gin is blooming and remains as inspiring, diverse, creative, and dynamic as ever,” he said. “This diversity reflects the innovation and passion driving the industry forward.”
Ward also noted a shift in consumer behavior, stating, “People are drinking less but better gin, with the category increasingly focusing on brands that have established quality credentials.” He highlighted the resurgence of traditional London Dry gin and the growing popularity of flavored gins that use real botanicals and authentic flavors. “Time-honored distilling techniques are in, while synthetics and colorants are out,” he added.
