Majestic Wine has announced its most successful Christmas trading period to date, with a surge in sales and a record number of customers during the festive season. The wine retailer reported a 1.9% increase in sales over the six weeks leading up to 30 December, surpassing its previous holiday sales record set earlier in 2023.
The company attributed its strong performance to the opening of seven new stores in 2023 and the growth of its specialist on-trade supply division, Majestic Commercial. Over the festive period, Majestic served more than 70,000 new customers for the first time, securing its largest-ever market share. Additionally, its on-trade teams supplied nearly 800 new gastropubs, bars, restaurants, and hospitality venues, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year.
Majestic’s investment of £1 million in expanding its store estate paid off, with 23 December becoming the retailer’s biggest trading day in history as last-minute shoppers stocked up on wines for Christmas. The company also experienced its busiest-ever Christmas Eve, further cementing its position as a leading destination for festive wine purchases.
Sales of fine wines rose by 4% during the period, while champagne and sparkling wines saw increases of 4.7% and 5.3%, respectively. Fortified wines also performed exceptionally well, with sales up 15%.
John Colley, CEO of Majestic, praised the efforts of the company’s teams, stating, “Majestic colleagues across all areas of our business pulled out all the stops to deliver another cracking Christmas for our customers. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved in such a tough market, and I cannot thank our teams enough for their hard work and passion for what we do.”
Colley emphasized that even in a challenging economic climate, Majestic’s market-leading product range, expert advice, and exceptional service continue to resonate with consumers, particularly during key seasonal moments like Christmas.
The record-breaking performance underscores Majestic Wine’s resilience and ability to attract customers despite tightening consumer budgets, solidifying its reputation as a trusted retailer in the competitive wine market.
