by Kaia

Barcelona Wine Week (BWW) will return to Fira de Barcelona from February 3-5, 2025, marking its fourth edition with significant growth and an expanded international presence. Originally launched in 2020 just before the pandemic disrupted global events, BWW has swiftly become a key fixture in Spain’s wine industry, attracting wineries, buyers, and professionals from across the globe.

This year, the event will occupy two pavilions, marking a 30% increase in exhibition space compared to previous editions. Over 1,200 wineries are expected to showcase a broad spectrum of Spanish wines, representing around 75 geographical and quality designations, including world-renowned regions like Rioja, Cava, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, and Jumilla.

Expanding Global Reach

In response to evolving global trends, BWW is increasingly targeting emerging markets beyond Spain’s traditional export destinations. This includes countries such as South Korea, Japan, Poland, Ireland, Denmark, and the Dominican Republic. These regions have been identified as key to diversifying Spain’s wine exports amid challenges such as declining global wine consumption and protectionist trade measures.

As part of its international expansion, BWW has expanded its government-backed hosted buyers program, which brings key importers and distributors from target markets to the event. For 2025, 700 international buyers have been invited—an 8% increase from previous editions. The program will also host around 1,000 domestic buyers, further emphasizing the importance of the Spanish market. These buyers represent a range of sectors, including large retailers, specialist trade outlets, and the hospitality industry.

Celebrating Spanish Wine Excellence

At the core of BWW is the opportunity to explore Spain’s diverse wine offerings. Organizers expect attendees to sample approximately 350,000 glasses of wine over the course of the three-day event. For those looking for a more in-depth experience, a series of masterclasses and tastings will be led by prominent winemakers, Masters of Wine, and Master Sommeliers.

Key highlights will include sessions on old vines with well-known producers such as Raúl Pérez (El Bierzo) and Fernando Mora (Bodegas Frontonio). A special tasting of pre-phylloxera wines from regions like Valladolid, Pontevedra, and Lanzarote will also take place. Additionally, regional showcases will feature ‘Los 10 magníficos de la D.O. Rías Baixas,’ focusing on Galicia’s Albariño wines, and a celebration of Rioja DOCa’s centenary with a tasting of eight historic wines.

Addressing Industry Trends

Beyond the tastings, BWW’s events program will tackle pressing issues facing the wine industry, such as the growing popularity of white wines, water management, and the impact of drought stress on vineyards. These discussions will provide valuable insights for producers, distributors, and other industry stakeholders.

With its expanded reach, robust international focus, and rich programming, Barcelona Wine Week 2025 is poised to be its most impactful edition yet, further solidifying its position as a leading platform for the global promotion of Spanish wines.
