Buckstin Brewing has unveiled a new beer as part of its participation in the Ales for ALS fundraising initiative, with a portion of the proceeds directed toward critical research for the incurable disease. The brewery joins hundreds of others across the U.S. in raising funds to support the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI).
Since its inception in 2013, Ales for ALS has raised over $5.5 million through the sale of limited-edition ales brewed with experimental hops provided by B.T. Loftus Ranches and YCH Hops. The program also includes various festivals and special events aimed at supporting ALS research.
This is Buckstin Brewing’s first time taking part in the Ales for ALS campaign. Business Development Manager Randy Edwards explained that the decision to join came after a visit from Mike Shannon, the National Director of Ales for ALS, in 2023. “There was an understanding that we would be late to the party with the opening of our Beaumont location,” said Edwards. “Now, here we are launching the beer in January 2025, coinciding with a visit from our friend Aimee Smith, who battles ALS and is from Southeast Texas.”
The beer, named My Shout!, is a West Coast pilsner-style brew, featuring citrus and fruity hop notes with a crisp finish. Edwards shared that the name of the beer was inspired by an Australian expression he encountered while visiting a brewery in Chicago in 2015. “When you go out to the pub, everyone takes turns buying drinks. When it’s your turn, you might say, ‘It’s my shout!’” Edwards explained. The term “shout” refers to the act of spontaneously treating others, a sentiment the brewery hopes to echo by supporting ALS research.
A percentage of the proceeds from My Shout! sales will benefit ALS TDI, a Boston-based nonprofit that focuses solely on ALS drug discovery. According to ALS TDI CEO and CSO Dr. Fernando Vieira, “With every dollar raised, the breweries participating in the Ales for ALS program are helping to support our work to end ALS.”
To further raise awareness, Buckstin will host an ALS awareness party on January 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. at its Beaumont location. The limited-edition beer has been on tap for about a month, and Edwards predicts that with strong demand, the 600-plus gallons brewed for the cause will likely be sold out by February.
The Ales for ALS campaign continues to make strides in the battle against the fatal disease, which progressively impairs motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, eventually affecting a person’s ability to move, speak, eat, and breathe.
