Glass of Bubbly, a prestigious sparkling wine competition, was founded by journalist and social media expert Christopher Walkey, alongside Eve Walkey, who serves as the Executive Editor and oversees the awards administration.
A Distinguished Panel of Judges
The awards are judged by a diverse panel of wine industry professionals, including wine writers, educators, sommeliers, winemakers, importers, and buyers. Professor Marin Berovic of the University of Ljubljana chairs the panel, while renowned wine writer Michael Edwards, author of The Finest Wines of Champagne, acts as the Honorary Judge.
Judging Process
The competition follows a rigorous blind-tasting procedure. Wines are initially evaluated to determine the appropriate category and are awarded either Gold or Silver medals. Gold and Silver medalists progress to Round Two, where they are re-scored to assess their suitability within their respective categories.
Awarding the Best
Trophies are awarded to the highest-scoring wines in each category, and the wine with the most points across both rounds is named The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly. Additionally, Michael Edwards, who participates in all the judging rounds, selects his personal favorite wine, which is awarded the Michael Edwards Trophy.
Categories
The competition recognizes sparkling wines in various unique categories, reflecting distinct qualities and flavor profiles. These include descriptive titles such as Creamy, Classic & Elegant, Herbal Gardens, First Date, Forget Me Not (unique personality), Gastronomic, Dessert, Hint of Spice, Light & Fruity, Meditation (evolving expression), Oaky & Toasty, Sea Breeze, Spring Fling (floral), Summer Days (refreshing), Tropical Burst, Winter Warmer (full-bodied), Zesty & Zingy, and Pastries Delight (yeasty, brioche, and nutty characteristics).
Each of these categories represents a specific attribute or experience, rather than production terms or sweetness levels, making the competition a diverse exploration of the world’s finest sparkling wines.
