Senator Malcolm Roberts of One Nation has undertaken a 3,000-kilometre journey through the Outback this week, visiting pubs and small businesses to promote his party’s policies. His tour kicked off with a stop at the Longreach Tavern on Wednesday, February 26, before continuing to Emerald the following day.
During his trip, Roberts outlined several key policy proposals from One Nation, including plans to slash fuel tax by 26 cents per litre, eliminate alcohol tax on drinks sold in licensed venues, and reduce power bills by 20 percent.
Roberts explained that the purpose of his tour was to visit Outback towns and communities where rising excise duties and costs were severely impacting local businesses.
“Only One Nation has policies that will put more money in Australians’ pockets and support struggling small businesses,” Roberts stated. He highlighted the danger of Outback pubs becoming extinct, with rising overheads pushing many to shut their doors.
“In many Outback towns, the pubs are in danger of becoming extinct, with the cost of overheads forcing them to shut their doors,” he said. “Our pub drive will shine a light on struggling towns that most politicians will never visit during their entire time in parliament.”
Roberts emphasized that communities in the Outback often suffered in silence under government policies. “The Outback is more affected by transport costs than most communities, yet politicians in Canberra often fail to hear the cries of those living with the pain these policies inflict,” he said.
Outback pubs, he added, serve as crucial community hubs. “Outback pubs are often the hub for the entire community, acting as much more than just a watering hole. One Nation wants to give venues a shot in the arm to keep their doors open as a place to see your mates.”
Roberts’ 3,000km itinerary includes stops in Warwick, Goondiwindi, St George, Roma, Charleville, Quilpie, Stonehenge, Longreach, Emerald, and Moura.
