Teamsters Local 1199 has accused Boston Beer, the parent company behind popular brands such as Samuel Adams, Truly Hard Seltzer, Angry Orchard, and Twisted Tea, of failing to bargain in good faith during contract negotiations.
Randy Verst, president of Teamsters Local 1199, expressed frustration with the company’s actions, stating, “Boston Beer Company is dragging its feet, and Teamsters won’t tolerate it.” Verst emphasized that the workers, who play a crucial role in the success of these well-known brands, deserve respect and fair treatment when it comes to contract talks.
While most employees at the Cincinnati brewery have been covered by a Teamsters contract for some time, newer Local 1199 members are currently negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement. These workers are seeking the same wage increases and working conditions their long-time colleagues have already secured.
Brian Morris, a blend technician at the Cincinnati facility, described the employer’s final offer as insulting. “Being asked to accept the employer’s last offer, which included wage cuts for our most senior third of the department, was aggravating to say the least,” Morris said. “The fact that we unanimously rejected it shows just how united we are. The company needs to return to bargaining because this is far from over.”
In response to the union’s claims, a Boston Beer spokesperson defended the company’s position, stating, “We held 16 bargaining sessions with the union over a several-month period that involved much back and forth. We’ve met with them whenever they requested to bargain, and we’re confident we’ve met our duty to bargain in good faith.”
