Wine sales in the Republic of Ireland remained below pre-pandemic levels in the past year, reflecting a broader trend of declining per capita alcohol consumption as people embrace more moderate drinking habits.
According to a report by employer lobby group Ibec’s Drinks Ireland division, the market share of wine in the total alcoholic beverage sector also decreased by 8.9% in 2022 compared to 2021 and by 17% compared to 2020 when the Covid-19 lockdowns led to a surge in in-home wine consumption due to the closure of pubs.
Although wine sales in 2022 were largely unchanged from the previous year, they remained 3% lower than pre-Covid levels. This trend is indicative of a shift in consumption habits in Ireland toward more balanced and moderate drinking.
Among the different wine categories, white wine continued to be the most popular, making up 48% of the total market, followed by red wine at 45%, and rosé, which saw a slightly smaller share in 2022 compared to the previous year, at 6%.
