The Beer Store to Continue Ontario Closures Amid Increased Competition

by Kaia

The Beer Store has announced plans to close several more of its locations across Ontario, following the closure of eight shops already. The most recent closure, located at 380 Donlands Ave. in East York, marks the beginning of a series of expected shutdowns throughout the year.

This move follows the Ontario government’s recent decision to expand the sale of alcohol to convenience stores and gas stations, a step aimed at increasing accessibility. In exchange for its cooperation, the privately owned chain received up to $250 million in funding to help manage the transition and prevent significant job losses.

Despite the closures, the Beer Store has assured customers that no employees will lose their jobs at the affected location. Staff members will be reassigned to other stores in the region.

The closures are likely to affect local communities, particularly those who rely on the Beer Store for services such as bottle returns.

The increased competition from convenience stores, which were permitted to sell alcohol under a 2015 Ontario government decision, has put pressure on the Beer Store to adapt. “Like any retailer in today’s evolving marketplace for beverage alcohol, we are continually evaluating our business operations to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our customers and adapting to change,” said Ozzie Ahmed, vice-president of retail.

As part of an agreement with the government, the Beer Store is committed to keeping at least 300 locations open until the end of 2025. After that, the company will face no restrictions on further closures.
