BARCELONA, Spain (March 2025) – In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, D.O. Cava and Jamón ConsorcioSerrano are honoring the vital contributions of women in shaping and advancing Spain’s wine and culinary sectors. These women have played an indispensable role in both preserving traditions and driving innovation within these iconic industries.
For years, women have been at the forefront of family-owned wineries, raising Cava to global acclaim and preserving the craftsmanship of Jamón ConsorcioSerrano. Today, their influence continues to grow as they take on key leadership roles in viticulture, winemaking, marketing, sales, and education. Their dedication is propelling the industries forward, ensuring their continued success and international recognition.
Women Leading the Cava Industry: Tradition Meets Innovation
Women have long been integral to the Cava industry, contributing to its evolution with expertise in winemaking, sustainability, and expanding its global reach. Their leadership has played a critical role in making Cava one of the world’s most respected sparkling wines.
“The visibility and impact of women in Cava are stronger than ever,” said Eva Plazas Torné, winemaker at Vilarnau. “Through initiatives like Cava Women, we are building a network that supports and inspires future generations of female winemakers.”
The Cava Women collective, which promotes collaboration and mentorship among women in the industry, has been instrumental in amplifying female voices. Key figures like Maite Esteve, CEO of Vins El Cep, have emphasized the importance of sustainability in the sector.
“Sustainability is the future of Cava. Women have pioneered ecological winemaking practices that protect the land and enhance the purity of our grapes,” Esteve stated. “More women are now leading the charge in innovation, blending tradition with sustainability.”
With over three decades of experience, Gemma Sibill, enologist at Oliver Viticultors, reflected on the significant progress made by women in the industry.
“In my 35 years in Cava, I’ve seen women’s contributions gain the recognition they deserve. This increased visibility is inspiring a new wave of female winemakers shaping the future of the industry,” said Sibill.
Women in Jamón ConsorcioSerrano: Advocating for Excellence and Global Expansion
Women have also been crucial in advancing the Jamón ConsorcioSerrano industry, with roles in quality control, international trade, and brand development. Anna Bosch Güell, President of Consorcio del Jamón Serrano Español since 2013, has led efforts to increase the global presence of this Spanish delicacy.
