Before pursuing a career in wine, Baraglia considered chiropractic care, but his path took a turn when he became involved in the family vineyard in Barossa Valley, which was originally planted by his grandfather 80 years ago. The Barossa Valley remains a significant influence on his winemaking journey, but Baraglia has since ventured north to Clare Valley, a region he holds in high regard.
Reflecting on Clare Valley, Baraglia expressed his satisfaction with the region, stating, “There isn’t much I would change about it.” However, he acknowledged that the distance from major cities presents challenges for tourism, particularly for visitors hoping to make it a day trip.
When asked about his ideal holiday destination, Baraglia emphasized the importance of unwinding with family in a quiet location. “A place where I can switch off, with a few bottles of Riesling, of course,” he added.
In line with his deep connection to the region, Baraglia highlights a wine from Clare Valley that stands out in his collection: the Pikes Hills & Valleys Riesling 2023. The wine, produced by Pikes Vintners in the Polish Hill area of Clare Valley, showcases a classic Riesling profile, with notes of apple, pear, white cherry, and a hint of honey. The wine, which features a medium sweetness and crisp acidity, offers a well-balanced palate with a touch of white pepper and kitchen spices.
Baraglia recommends pairing the Riesling with dishes such as John Dory fillets with a lemon-cream-chive sauce, noting the wine’s lovely texture and good length. The Pikes Hills & Valleys Riesling 2023 (ABV: 11%) is available at an approximate retail price of £12.
