In a follow-up to Drinks Trade’s exploration of international beer trends in issue 94, the publication reconnected with Siegfrid Bacani, founder of 7000 Islands Drinks, to discuss the growing opportunities for Engkanto, the Philippines’ most awarded craft beer brand, in the Australian market.
Bacani highlighted Engkanto’s appeal as a premium imported beer option that stands out on both retailer shelves and venue drink menus. “The appetite for something different, for new flavors, is gaining traction in Western markets like the UK, the US, and Australia,” he said. “The shift seen in food trends is now spilling over into beverages, and beer is well-positioned to embrace these evolving tastes.”
A Unique Filipino-Inspired Craft Beer Lineup
Engkanto Brewery currently offers four distinct products in Australia, each infused with Filipino flavors. Among them, ‘Paint Me Purple’ Ube Lager and ‘High Hive’ Honey Ale have garnered significant attention. The Ube Lager features the distinct taste of Philippine ube, a purple yam similar to New Zealand’s kumara, while the Honey Ale is brewed with raw honey sourced from the high-altitude apiaries of Baguio.
Additionally, the lineup includes ‘Mango Nation’ Hazy IPA, which incorporates Philippine Carabao mangoes from Guimaras, the country’s first Geographic Indication, and ‘Live It Up’ Lager, brewed with Australian hops.
According to Bacani, the Ube Lager is the brand’s best-seller due to its uniqueness, but the ‘High Hive’ Honey Ale sees the most repeat purchases. “Retailers and hospitality operators tell us the taste is there,” he noted, underscoring the beers’ recognition at the World’s Best Beer Awards in London and the AIBAs in Melbourne last year.
Market Challenges for International Craft Beer in Australia
Despite positive consumer reception, Bacani pointed out the difficulties international craft breweries face in Australia. “The opportunity for international craft breweries is really limited here, not because of demand, but due to structural barriers,” he explained. Key challenges include categorization issues in off-premise settings and established tap contract restrictions in on-premise venues.
To overcome these obstacles, Bacani emphasized the importance of consumer exposure. “For international craft beers to succeed, we need to reach the mainstream—get more liquid on lips,” he said. A recent tasting at Sydney’s Oak Barrel liquor store demonstrated this strategy in action. “Every Aussie bloke who walked in, even those hesitant about an Ube Lager, Mango Hazy, or Honey Ale, left with a four-pack in hand. Flavor wins.”
Engkanto’s Expansion Through Strategic Events
To further engage Australian consumers, Engkanto has partnered with Spectapular Events for the upcoming GABS Brisbane and Sydney beer festivals. The ‘7000 Islands Philippine Village’ experience will debut at GABS Brisbane (May 23-24) and GABS Sydney (May 30-31, 2025), offering visitors a taste of Engkanto’s craft beers paired with Filipino cuisine in a tropical island-inspired setting.
“Events like these allow us to genuinely connect with Aussie beer drinkers and showcase the food-and-beer pairing experience,” Bacani said.
A Brewing Philosophy Rooted in Filipino Heritage
Since its 2017 launch, Engkanto has built a strong reputation for high-quality, food-friendly craft beers, an approach deeply influenced by Filipino culture. Head Brewer Michael Jordan, an American who has brewed extensively in Asia, advocates for incorporating local ingredients into the brewing process. “There’s this fourth dimension of flavor—bringing in foods, fruits, and vegetables to the traditional malt, hops, and water equation,” Bacani explained.
