New Zealand Wine Continues to Thrive, Bolstered by Sustainability and International Recognition

by Kaia

The 2025 season is shaping up to be a promising one for New Zealand’s wine industry, with the country’s reputation remaining strong in key global markets. According to Fabian, this optimism is further supported by recent findings from New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW). The organization’s Brand Health Tracking webinar highlighted the importance of New Zealand’s long-standing sustainability efforts, particularly its 30-year commitment to Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. These sustainability credentials have proven invaluable in an increasingly eco-conscious marketplace.

Charlotte Read, General Manager of Brand at NZW, shared insights from her recent participation at Prowein in March, noting that New Zealand wine stood out in various discussions. “Our wine was singled out at many of the presentations I attended, especially for its impressive value growth across several export markets, even in the midst of challenging conditions. Additionally, our strong reputation for sustainability continues to be a key selling point,” Read remarked.

The global recognition of New Zealand wine was also significantly boosted by the highly successful Pinot Noir New Zealand 2025 event, held in Ōtautahi Christchurch this February. The event, which welcomed a host of influential international guests, was a showcase of Aotearoa’s rich culture and hospitality. Attendees were treated to Monique Fiso’s modern-style hangi, a highlight that added a unique touch to the proceedings at the Christchurch Town Hall.

The event was inspired by themes from te ao Māori, including Tūrangawaewae, Kaikiakitanga, and Ā Mua, which guided the experience and resonated deeply with visitors. International media, who had the chance to explore New Zealand’s wine regions, were especially impressed. British wine writer and presenter Olly Smith remarked, “I’ve returned to the UK feeling like a portal has been opened to your world-class Pinot Noir on a level I could barely have dreamt of. And that open portal has travelled home with me.” This glowing response is a testament to the continued success and international appeal of New Zealand’s wine industry.
