The Lone Star State’s wine industry is in full bloom, with vineyards expanding, new wineries emerging, and Texas wines receiving increasing accolades. While this marks promising news, Texas wine still strives for greater recognition on the national stage.
January Wiese, the Executive Director of the Texas Hill Country Wineries trade association, points out that “a majority of Texas wine is consumed by Texans,” with limited exports beyond the state’s borders.
However, this doesn’t necessarily translate into widespread local devotion. “Within the state, we do still struggle with people not even knowing that we have a wine country right here in their backyard,” she remarks.
With this in mind, the Texas wine industry warmly invites you to come and explore their offerings. To showcase the diversity and quality of Texas wines, numerous wineries throughout the Hill Country region are opening their doors for exclusive tastings during Texas Wine Month.
The tradition of celebrating Texas Wine Month in October dates back to 1999 when former President George W. Bush, then the governor of Texas, declared the month as a tribute to the state’s thriving wine industry. In response, eight Hill Country wineries united to establish the Texas Hill Country Wineries association and introduced a passport program, granting wine enthusiasts the opportunity to savor the region’s finest offerings throughout October.
Visitors will not only have the chance to enjoy exquisite wines but also gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry behind each bottle. This initiative seeks to foster a sense of pride and awareness about Texas wines, making it an ideal time for locals and visitors alike to discover the hidden gems nestled in their own “backyard.”
So, embrace the spirit of Texas Wine Month, and embark on a journey of taste and discovery across the scenic Hill Country. With a Texas Wine Month Passport in hand, you can unlock access to more than 45 wineries, each ready to share its unique flavors and winemaking expertise with you. Whether you’re a wine aficionado or a novice, this passport offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the vibrant and burgeoning world of Texas wine.
