SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — National Beer Day, observed on April 7, marks the anniversary of the legalization of beer sales in the United States following Prohibition. The day commemorates a significant shift in U.S. alcohol laws, which took place in 1933, when the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, allowing the legal purchase and consumption of beer and wine after a nearly 14-year ban.
Prohibition, which lasted from 1919 to 1933, was enacted under the 18th Amendment, which prohibited the production, sale, and distribution of alcohol. This period coincided with the early years of the Great Depression, putting additional strain on an already struggling economy. Roosevelt’s decision to legalize beer was part of his efforts to help stabilize the nation and restore public confidence.
San Diego, often referred to as the “Capital of Craft Beer,” is home to over 150 independent craft breweries. The county has become a hub for beer lovers, and its craft beer scene continues to grow, with a variety of breweries offering unique brews for enthusiasts. One standout in San Diego’s craft beer community is Karl Strauss Brewery. Established in 1989, Karl Strauss was the first brewery to open in San Diego since the end of Prohibition. The brewery now operates four locations in San Diego County, including three in the city of San Diego and one in Carlsbad. Karl Strauss has also expanded to other parts of California, with locations in Temecula, Corona, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, and downtown Los Angeles. Recently, the brewery launched its latest creation, “Nectaron of the Gods IPA,” in collaboration with Pizza Port.
In celebration of National Beer Day, several local breweries, including Societe Brewing, are offering special discounts. Societe Brewing is providing 20% off draft and canned beers at both of its tasting rooms, located in Kearny Mesa and Old Town.
While beer can be enjoyed year-round, National Beer Day offers the perfect opportunity for San Diegans and visitors alike to support local breweries and reflect on the history of the craft beer industry.
