Despite a global decline in wine consumption, Spain’s Rioja region has experienced a modest increase in wine sales. In 2024, Rioja sold 328.5 million bottles, equivalent to 240 million liters, with red wine accounting for 83.5% of the total volume.
This slight 0.6% increase in Rioja’s sales comes as a surprise, especially given the broader trends in the wine industry. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), global wine consumption fell by approximately 3% in 2023, marking a continued downturn in the global market. This trend is particularly notable for red wines, which have been hit hardest.
An OIV report reveals a significant 25% drop in red wine production since its peak in 2004. As a result, red wines’ share of the global wine output has decreased from 48% to 43% by 2021. In contrast, white wine production has increased by 13% since its lowest point in 2002, surpassing reds in global share in 2013. Rosé wines have also seen growth, with a 25% increase in global output between 2001 and 2021, raising its market share from around 6% to more than 8%.
However, Rioja has remained committed to its red wines, which continue to dominate its production. In 2024, Rioja’s red wine sales grew by 0.6%, maintaining a market share of 83.52%, a slight increase from 83.4% in 2023. White wine sales from Rioja also showed a small rise, increasing by 1.9% and slightly boosting their share from 11.27% to 11.29%. Meanwhile, rosé wines saw a slight decrease in share, falling from 5.33% to 5.18%.
Despite the global challenges facing the wine industry, Rioja’s ability to maintain steady sales, particularly in red wine, highlights the region’s resilience and its continuing dominance in Spain’s wine market.
