NAPA, CA — On April 9, a group of influential donors from the President’s Circle Giving Society at Napa Valley College (NVC) toured the nearly completed Wine Spectator Wine Education Center, a $10 million facility set to enhance wine education in the heart of California’s renowned wine country.
Funded by the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation’s largest-ever donation, the center is expected to provide hundreds of students with opportunities to pursue careers in viticulture and winemaking. It marks a significant milestone for NVC, which has been a leader in wine education for decades.
“We’re going to be using all of these learning spaces to bring wine to life,” said Professor Paul Gospodarczyk during the tour.
The groundbreaking for the center occurred less than a year ago, on May 17, 2024, and the first phase of the building is expected to open in time for fall courses. Once completed, the Wine Spectator Wine Education Center will more than double the space available for NVC’s Viticulture and Winery Technology (VWT) program, with a 10,000-square-foot facility dedicated to advanced learning. This will include two flexible sensory classrooms with a combined seating capacity for 160 students and a laboratory classroom with 28 stations. Notably, the sensory lab will become the largest classroom on campus.
A Hub for Wine Career Training
The VWT program at NVC is one of the most robust community college wine technology programs in the U.S., enrolling over 800 students annually. The program provides hands-on, practical training with a strong focus on career readiness, boasting an impressive job placement rate of over 80% for graduates.
The program attracts a diverse student body, including recent high school graduates, professionals seeking to upgrade their skills, retirees, and aspiring hobbyist winemakers. Many students are first-generation college attendees, reflecting the inclusive nature of the program.
During the tour, attendees also visited the future site of phase two: a Wine and Hospitality Training Center. This new addition will feature a demonstration kitchen and will offer courses in wine marketing, sales, and hospitality. Students will gain experience in areas such as winery food programs, tasting room management, tourism, and the burgeoning field of winery chefs. A fundraising campaign is currently underway to support this phase of development.
NVC’s Vital Role in Napa Valley’s Wine Industry
Instructors like Paul Wagner emphasized the practical nature of the program, where students often bring real-world insights from their industry experience into the classroom. “The students are here working in the industry. They never ask, ‘Is this on the test?’” Wagner noted. “They say, ‘This is how we do it at my winery.’”
The NVC campus, located just south of downtown Napa, includes a five-acre vineyard and a commercial winery, the first bonded winery in the California community college system. Degrees offered at NVC include viticulture, winemaking, and wine marketing and sales. The Napa Valley College Foundation, established in 1968, has long supported students with scholarships and financial assistance, including relief for those displaced by wildfires or in need of technology. The foundation’s current focus is upgrading the VWT program to accommodate the growing demand and integrate the latest in industry technology.
Enoch Shully, NVC’s manager of hospitality, winery, and culinary operations, summed up the mission: “We are trying to connect the college to the world.”
The Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation, which helped fund the center, has raised more than $30 million to support education in the wine and culinary industries. This has been made possible by generous contributions from vintners worldwide and wine lovers who participate in events like Wine Spectator’s Wine Experience.
The Wine Spectator Wine Education Center promises to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of wine education and industry leadership, cementing NVC’s position as a hub for wine career training in one of the world’s most famous wine regions.
