Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a name synonymous with both the wine it bears and the land it hails from, boasts a storied past that spans centuries. Translating to ‘The Pope’s New Castle,’ this village bears witness to a profound connection with papal history, a heritage so deeply ingrained that even the labels adorning the majestic wine bottles proudly display papal keys. While the methods and techniques of winemaking have evolved with time, the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape remains unaltered.
JSPA Design’s rammed earth winery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this historic winemaking region. Situated within the charming village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Southeast France, this ambitious project encompasses the creation of a wine cellar, an extension of an existing winery, a boutique, and the development of inviting public event spaces.
Nestled just three kilometers to the east of the Rhône River and a mere twelve kilometers north of the picturesque town of Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is home to an esteemed Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC). This AOC, encircling the village, ranks among the most prestigious in the southern reaches of the Rhône Valley. It was in the year 1309 that Pope Clement V made a historic decision to relocate the papal seat from Rome to the town of Avignon. This monumental shift not only altered the course of history but also had a profound impact on viticulture in the region, as the significance of wine in Christian traditions became intertwined with the papacy’s newfound home.
